Marksdale Gardens, managed by Trinity Management, is a low-income residential property located in Boston, Massachusetts, consisting of 178 units. Spanning multiple buildings spread across city blocks, the property posed unique challenges for implementing effective security measures.

Historically, Marksdale Gardens lacked video surveillance, leaving both residents and management vulnerable to criminal activity and safety concerns in the surrounding neighborhood. To address these issues, Electronic Security Group (ESG), a trusted security systems integrator, was brought in to design and deploy an advanced integrated security system tailored to the needs of the property.

The Challenge

Rising safety concerns across a complex, multi-building property

Marksdale Gardens faced critical security concerns due to rising incidents of gun violence, homelessness, and drug-related activity in adjacent neighborhoods. These issues left residents feeling unsafe and underscored the need for proactive security measures.

However, the geographic layout of the property — with multiple buildings spread across public streets — made deploying a wired infrastructure infeasible due to the high costs and disruption associated with installing fiber. Wireless connectivity also presented challenges, as open lines of sight between buildings required careful planning to ensure seamless signal transmission. In some areas, foliage had to be cleared to maintain unobstructed wireless paths.

Given these challenges, Trinity Management sought a cost-effective, reliable, and scalable video security solution to improve safety and security for its residents proactively.

The Solution

60GHz wireless backhaul for a 20-camera surveillance network

The project was led by David Belitsky, Client Manager at ESG, in collaboration with Altowav. After evaluating various options, ESG recommended a 60GHz wireless network powered by Altowav's technology. This solution was chosen for its multi-gigabit bandwidth, low-latency performance critical for real-time video feeds, resistance to interference compared to traditional 5 GHz networks, and ease of installation.

The deployment included six Altowav K60 point-to-point links, consisting of 12 radios installed approximately 20 feet high on building exteriors. The system connected 20 Hanwha cameras, including multi-sensor and dome cameras, with a total of 43 video channels managed through Hanwha WAVE, a robust video management system supported by a BCD Workstation and server. Classified object motion analytics were implemented for vehicle and pedestrian detection, further enhancing the system's security capabilities.

Altowav's local support, short lead times, and USA-made products ensured smooth deployment and ongoing reliability. ESG technicians praised the system, calling it one of the easiest wireless solutions they had ever installed and programmed.

"Electronic Security Group Inc. is always looking for cutting-edge solutions to improve the networking infrastructure of the security systems we install. After discussing the specifications and designing this project with the Altowav team, we were confident the Altowav solution would bring a quality product with top performance to our installation. The installation of the radios was straightforward, and our technicians love the ease of programming and setup of the devices. The network performance is exactly as expected. We couldn't be happier with the results and look forward to more projects utilizing the Altowav line of wireless products."

The Result

Immediate improvements to safety and security

The Altowav-powered wireless security network went live in September 2024, delivering immediate improvements to the safety and security of Marksdale Gardens. The presence of cameras provided a significant deterrent, visibly refining resident behavior and discouraging potential criminal activity.

While it is still early to measure the direct impact on crime reduction, the proactive deployment has provided both management and residents with peace of mind. Additionally, the ease of installation and high performance of the Altowav system have prompted Trinity Management to plan expansions to other properties under its management, as well as additional buildings at Marksdale Gardens.

ESG intends to incorporate Altowav wireless solutions into future client installations, citing the system's reliability and simplicity.

Future Plans

Expanding across the Trinity Management portfolio

Trinity Management is already planning to expand the Altowav solution to additional properties under its portfolio, as well as other buildings at Marksdale Gardens. ESG also plans to recommend Altowav technology for future projects. The success of this installation has positioned Altowav as a trusted provider of innovative wireless security solutions, ensuring safer environments for residents and property managers alike.
